HJ 21 , SJ 25
Title
Constitutional Amendment to create the Virginia Redistricting Commission

Action
Call your legislators and urge them to co-sponsor AND support these resolutions, HJ 21 and SJ 25! They would create an independent commission that would end gerrymandering – the two-century practice of legislators drawing their districts to protect incumbents and the majority party.
Comments
Under the proposal, a seven-member commission (four members appointed by legislative party leaders, three independent members) would draw state legislative and U.S. House districts following criteria intended to create districts that are contiguous, compact, regularly shaped and conforming to recognized political, cultural and geographical boundaries. The commission would be barred from drawing districts to favor any political party or using political data, such as previous election results, in their design except to comply with court decisions (such as with respect to minority representation). Amending the state constitution requires General Assembly passage in consecutive legislative sessions with an intervening House election and a majority vote in the next general or special election.
