Comments
Medicaid expansion would bring 462,000 additional Virginians health care coverage. By not accepting the federally-funded Medicaid expansion, Virginia is leaving on the table $14.7 billion over the next decade.

Expanding Medicaid allows some state-paid services to be paid for with federal funds instead, including almost $300 million in mental health and substance abuse treatment, $640 million in health care for the poor, and $300 million in health care for prisoners. This would save money in the big picture, because people who don’t earn enough to pay for Obamacare, but earn too much to qualify for Medicaid, often go without basic preventative medicine, and cost the system far more when they end up needing emergency care later at hospitals. And we all pay for that. Medicaid expansion would create as many as 30,000 new jobs in Virginia.

These bills would expand coverage to those who are under 65 years of age, not pregnant, not entitled to or enrolled in other benefits, and whose income does not exceed 133 percent of the poverty line.
